Socialism: You have 2 cows and you give one to your neighbor.
Communism: You have 2 cows; the Government takes both and gives you some milk.
Fascism: You have 2 cows; the Government takes both and sells you some milk.
Nazism: You have 2 cows; the Government takes both and shoots you.
I was looking through my physics text book and found this. It’s a good day.
How significant are you, really? You are the result of 14 billion years of chaos. If there was even the most insignificant difference in the universe prior to your birth you wouldn’t even exist, and nobody would notice. Your existence is just a single possibility out of an infinite number of possibilities on an isolated rock floating around an unimpressive star in some arm of a tiny galaxy. There is something magical in that though. Out of all of the infinite possibilities in an incomprehensibly large universe, you exist. Through the births and deaths of stars, the chaos of galaxy and solar system formation, the luck our planet had in finding conditions which allow it to bear life, and the harsh process of natural selection, you were granted life. You posses the capacity to create. You posses the capacity to learn. You posses the capacity to love. Your significance is one-out-of-infinity, and it is up to you to look at the one or the infinity.
Taxes are fundamental to run any society. They provide goods and services to those who need them as well as the general population that would not otherwise be available and, in some cases, like NASA, supplement the market. I do, however, mind when my taxes are supporting regulatory committees that suppress the free market and allow a select few corporations to control prices of important services. I mind when I am forced to pay to provide those services to those who cannot afford them because of the outrageous prices Government enforced monopolies produce. I mind when my taxes are not being spent on feeding the hungry, or supporting scientific research, but are instead being spent on murdering civilians and non-combatants in other countries. I mind when my taxes are being spent on measures designed to violate my right to privacy. I mind when my taxes are being spent on supporting agencies who can violate the constitution without repercussions. I mind when my taxes are being used to take hard-working, productive members of society and sending them back to a violent and poor country based on the fact that they were not born here.
I do not mind paying taxes.
I mind it when they are wasted.
Regardless of your gender, ethnicity, sexuality, or religion, you are the master of your own future. Nobody owns your body, mind or time. Do not allow yourself to be repressed by culture, society or your peers. You a human being, dammit.
